March 2026 Officer of the Month
Congratulations to Officer James Murphey for being selected as the Officer of the Month for March 2026!
Officer Murphey joined the UNC Charlotte Police Department in October 2025, and is a first-time recipient of this award. Although still relatively new to the department, he has already made a strong and lasting impression through his positive attitude, professionalism and genuine dedication to the job. He consistently arrives early, actively seeks opportunities to improve and demonstrates a strong commitment to developing into a well-rounded officer. Dependable and team-oriented, he is always willing to lend a hand and never hesitates to step up when needed.
Officer Murphey has quickly proven he possesses the drive and determination necessary to help keep our campus safe. Recently, he responded as the first officer on scene to a reported larceny at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in the Student Union. Although the suspect had already left the store, Officer Murphey searched and located the individual in the food court, despite efforts to conceal their identity. When the suspect attempted to flee, Officer Murphey acted decisively, maintaining control of the situation until backup arrived and an arrest was made. His actions resulted in the recovery of multiple prohibited items, and further investigation revealed the individual to be a convicted felon with a significant criminal history. Officer Murphey’s initiative and vigilance directly contributed to removing a dangerous individual from campus without incident.
Just days later, Officer Murphey again demonstrated exceptional performance while responding to a medical emergency involving an individual in distress near the Motorsports Lab Building. As the first officer on scene, he quickly assessed the situation, requested medical assistance and initiated lifesaving measures — ensuring appropriate resources were enroute while remaining calm, focused and supportive. His ability to keep the individual engaged and stable until EMS arrived played a critical role in ensuring the individual received the care they needed.
For an officer early in his career, Officer Murphey has already shown he is capable, composed and prepared to meet the challenges of this profession. His initiative, sound judgment and commitment to both the campus community and his own professional growth make him a deserving recipient of this recognition.
With this achievement, he is now eligible for the Officer of the Year Award.
Congratulations Officer James Murphey!
