April 2026 Officer of the Month
Congratulations to Corporal Jonisha Cullars for being selected as the Officer of the Month for April 2026!
Serving as the department’s Recruiter and Background Investigator, Cpl. Cullars plays a critical role in building the future of the agency while continuing to provide direct operational support. She balances these responsibilities effectively, contributing to both immediate staffing needs and long-term organizational success.
Cpl. Cullars consistently exemplifies professionalism, integrity and dedication in all aspects of her role. She maintains a positive attitude and a strong, team-oriented mindset, regularly volunteering for additional shifts and stepping in to support patrol operations — even when not scheduled. Her willingness to assist during staffing shortages reflects a strong sense of responsibility to both her colleagues and the University community.
Recently, while assigned to assist with shift coverage due to staffing shortages, Cpl. Cullars responded to a critical call involving an individual with special needs on campus who was threatening suicide. Utilizing available technology, she located the individual near the Student Union. Demonstrating professionalism, compassion and sound judgment, Cpl. Cullars safely engaged the individual and was able to bring her back to the police department, despite the individual’s heightened emotional state. Recognizing signs of prior injury, she promptly requested MEDIC assistance. The individual was subsequently transported to the hospital for further care. Although multiple officers were actively searching, Cpl. Cullars’s actions were instrumental in bringing the situation to a safe and positive resolution.
Cpl. Cullars’s ability to manage complex and sensitive situations with confidence, care and attention to detail further distinguishes her performance. She consistently enforces University policies and city ordinances with fairness and respect, helping to maintain a safe and supportive campus environment. Over time, she has developed into a highly dependable and well-rounded officer, demonstrating a clear commitment to growth and future leadership.
This marks her sixth time receiving this distinction, reflecting her sustained excellence and unwavering commitment to service. With this achievement, she is eligible for consideration for the Officer of the Year Award.
