July 2026 Officer of the Month

Congratulations to Officer James Murphey for being selected as the Officer of the Month for July 2026!

Officer Murphey consistently arrives to work on time, prepared and with a positive attitude that supports both his fellow officers and the UNC Charlotte community. He has demonstrated a strong interest in investigative work and willingly accepts challenging assignments. Throughout each shift, Officer Murphey remains proactive in enforcing University regulations and state laws with fairness, professionalism and integrity. His dedication was exemplified during two notable incidents this month.

On July 3, while conducting foot patrol at the Marriott Hotel, Officer Murphey observed two individuals on the light rail platform preparing to engage in a physical altercation. He responded immediately and successfully prevented the fight from escalating. During his investigation, Officer Murphey determined that one of the individuals had previously stolen the victim’s AirPods, caused a disturbance at the hotel and left without paying a bar tab. Through his efforts, the stolen property was recovered and returned to its rightful owner, and the suspect was issued a trespass order from the University.

On July 18, Officer Murphey responded to a report of an individual behaving inappropriately at the bus stop outside Robinson Hall. Although the suspect initially provided a false name and date of birth, Officer Murphey remained diligent and was able to positively identify the individual as someone who had previously been trespassed from the University on multiple occasions. In addition to arresting the suspect for second-degree trespassing, Officer Murphey’s search incident to arrest resulted in additional charges of felony drug possession.

Officer Murphey is a dependable, well-rounded officer who approaches every shift with a commitment to learning, serving others and taking initiative. His professionalism, work ethic and dedication to proactive policing have made a positive impact on the department and the campus community.

With this achievement, he is eligible for consideration for the Officer of the Year Award.
