August 2026 Officer of the Month
Congratulations to Officer Devin Cue for being selected as the Officer of the Month for August 2026!
Officer Cue consistently reports to work on time, prepared and ready for duty. He routinely handles one of the highest volumes of calls during his shift and does so without complaint. Regardless of the nature of the call, Officer Cue approaches his responsibilities with professionalism, integrity and compassion. His commitment to serving the UNC Charlotte community was particularly evident during a challenging incident this month involving a student in crisis.
One day in August, officers responded to multiple calls involving a student exhibiting signs of significant emotional distress. Earlier in the day, officers made contact with the student following reports of erratic behavior. At that time, the student indicated that he was okay, declined medical assistance and was provided information regarding available University resources.
Several hours later, officers were called again after the same student began yelling, screaming and kicking a wall during class. Officer Cue, along with Sgt. Nell, made contact with the student and quickly recognized that the situation required patience and a measured approach. Rather than rushing the interaction, Officer Cue remained calm and worked patiently to establish communication while ensuring the student’s safety.
As the interaction continued, the student indicated that he was experiencing thoughts of self-harm and began engaging in self-injurious behavior. Officer Cue and the other responding personnel requested MEDIC and continued to remain with the student while attempting to keep him calm and safe. Officers also communicated with the student’s father, who provided valuable information regarding his son’s behaviors when experiencing stress or becoming overstimulated.
Officer Cue continued to demonstrate patience and compassion as MEDIC conducted a mental health evaluation and the student’s father responded to campus. Ultimately, the student was able to communicate with responders, declined transportation to the hospital and voluntarily left campus with his father. The student and his father were also provided with appropriate University and Mecklenburg County resources.
Officer Cue’s response demonstrated the importance of recognizing when a situation requires more than traditional enforcement action. His ability to remain calm, patient and compassionate helped de-escalate a difficult situation involving a member of our community who was experiencing a significant crisis.
Officer Devin Cue joined the UNC Charlotte Police Department in August 2023, and has since established himself as a dependable, hardworking and compassionate member of the department. This marks the third time he has received this recognition, reflecting his continued professionalism, dedication and commitment to excellence in serving both the department and the UNC Charlotte community.
With this achievement, he is eligible for consideration for the Officer of the Year Award.
Congratulations Officer Devin Cue on this well-deserved award!
